Cusco is home to several colorful mountains, but two of them attract most travelers: Vinicunca, the famous Rainbow Mountain, and Palccoyo, its quieter alternative. Both are spectacular — the right choice depends on your fitness, your time and the kind of experience you are looking for.
Vinicunca (Rainbow Mountain)
- Altitude: 5,036 m at the viewpoint.
- Hike: about 1.5 to 2 hours uphill each way (or 30 minutes with our ATV option).
- Difficulty: moderate to challenging because of the altitude.
- Highlights: the iconic seven-color slopes, views of Apu Ausangate and the option to add the stunning Red Valley.
- Crowds: busy, especially between 9 and 11 a.m.
Ideal if you want the classic, iconic view and you are already acclimatized. Combine it with the Red Valley on our Rainbow Mountain & Red Valley tour or ride there on the ATV version.
Palccoyo
- Altitude: about 4,900 m.
- Hike: an easy 45-minute walk.
- Difficulty: easy to moderate.
- Highlights: three rainbow mountains in one place and a curious stone forest.
- Crowds: very few visitors.
Perfect for families, travelers with limited time or anyone who prefers a calmer experience. Discover it on our Palccoyo full-day tour.
Our recommendation
If you are fit and want the famous photo, go for Vinicunca. If you want beautiful colors with less effort and fewer people, choose Palccoyo. And if you have two days, combine a rainbow mountain with the 7 Lagoons of Ausangate and a night in the hot springs of Pacchanta.
